abstract = "The objective of this study was to map the Mogi-Pardo river basin
focusing on the dynamics of land use and land cover change at the
sugarcane and citrus areas over the last 26 years. The study
covers 51,700 km2 at the north and northeast regions of the State
of S{\~a}o Paulo. By investigating time series data from the
MODIS sensor and interpreting images of the Thematic Mapper (TM)
sensor, we evaluated the changes in land use and cover between the
years 1988 and 2014. The mapping was based on images from Landsat
7's ETM+ sensor and images from Landsat 5's TM sensor. There was
an expansion of sugarcane areas from a little over 1.0 million ha
(21%) to about 2.2 million ha (44%), while areas used for citrus
production decreased from 488,686 ha (9.5%) for 281,223 ha (5.4%).
The number of citrus farms decreased from 15,392 to 11,638, while
sugarcane farms increased from 21,121 to 30,884. Municipalities
which previously produced mainly citrus, such as Bebedouro,
Colina, It{\'a}polis and Ol{\'{\i}}mpia, became sugarcane
producers, which caused their rural economy to be more dependent
on the performance of the sugarcane industry. However, at the
municipalities of Casa Branca, Conchal, Mogi Gua{\c{c}}u and Mogi
Mirim (region 02), there was an expansion of citrus areas/annual
crops. Some years are still necessary for an accurate assessment
on whether the sector's low profitability and the expansion of the
sugarcane industry will not cause restrictions to the expansion or
the decrease in citrus areas at this region.",
